Access Statement for the Garden Hotel

This access statement is intended to provide additional information for all guests wishing to stay at the hotel or use its facilities. Recognition has been given to include guests with an impairment, which could include:
Mobility, Sight, Hearing, Speech, Learning disabilities or any other hidden impairment.
The Garden Hotel is located by Bangor Railway Station. If you are travelling by car, enter the city centre and follow signs for the railway station. Before the station take 1st turning left, pass the “Lidl Supermarket” and you will find the car park 15 yards on the right.
The Garden Hotel is on all mobile phone networks and our reception can be contacted on 01248 362189 should guests require any assistance upon arrival.
Access Statement – Restaurant
Approach
The property is located on a busy main road although a drop-off point is available outside the main entrance.
Parking:
Limited parking is available at the rear of the property. There are currently no designated disabled parking bays.
The surface of the parking area consists of a combination of concrete and tarmac.
The parking bays are situated on ground that falls away gently from right to left.
From the parking bays at the rear of the property the main entrance can be accessed via two routes:
I. An external staircase consisting of 11 steps
(200 mm in height / 1500 mm in width / 300 mm in depth).
The steps have colour contrasting handrails on both the left and right hand side. External lighting is switched on during hours of darkness to assist customers walking from the car park to the main entrance.
II. The private road used to access the parking bays at the rear of the property. This road is uneven and not level and therefore may not be suitable to all. The road also has an incline (when ascending) in the approach to the main road entrance. Lighting along this road is limited.
Main entrance
The main entrance of the restaurant is located on High Street. The main entrance is accessed via the pavement.
Front door is single leaf, with a clear opening of 850 mm in width. This door is usually permanently open and contrasts in colour to surrounding walls.
A door bell is located on the doorframe at a height of 1470 mm for anyone requiring assistance.
Entry to the property via a 45 mm high threshold at base of door.
There is also a second, internal door. The door is single leaf and consists of wood and glass panels. The door has a clear opening of 760 mm in width and contrasts in colour to surrounding walls. This door is permanently closed unlike the main entrance and has a D-shaped handle. The door is pulled to open.
Restaurant
Access to the restaurant is via a single leaf door with a clear opening of 760 mm in width.
The door contains glass and contrasts in colour to surrounding walls. The door also includes a colour contrasted lever action handle.
A waiting area is available for those waiting to be seated at their tables. This area consists of chairs with firm back support and arm rests.
The restaurant is split level and contains two level changes. The step leading from the bar into the dining area is 125 mm in height and includes a colour contrasted step nosing on the top edge of the step. The second step which divides the dining area is 65 mm in height and includes a colour contrasted step nosing on the top edge of the step.
The restaurant provides table service.
Lighting within the restaurant is subdued to suit the environment but is adjustable.
Restaurant toilets
Route to toilets
At present there are no wheelchair accessible toilet facilities at the restaurant.
The ladies and gents toilets at the restaurant are on the ground floor, although there are 2 steps leading to the ladies toilets measuring 1000 mm in width; 300 mm in depth and 150 mm in height. Both steps incorporate colour contrasting step nosing.
Toilets accesses via single step from dining area (65 mm in height – as mentioned within the restaurant section).
Single leaf door to access the corridor where both toilets are located has a clear opening of 700 mm in width. The swing door opens inward and contrasts in colour to surrounding walls. The door also includes a colour contrasted push plate.
Gents
Access to the small gents’ toilet is via a single leaf door that is pushed to open. The door contrasts in colour to the surrounding walls.
Toilet consists of 1 x urinal; 1 x stall and 1 x hand wash basin.
Floor, walls and doors offer a contrast in colour. Slight contrast between white suite and beige walls.
Hand wash basin incorporates chrome push top taps.
There are currently no grab/support rails within the toilet.
Ladies
Access to the Ladies toilet is via single leaf door that is pushed to open. The door contrasts in colour to the surrounding walls.
Toilet consists of 2 x stall and 1 x hand wash basin built into a work surface.
Floor, walls and doors offer a contrast in colour. Slight contrast between white suite and beige walls.
Hand wash basin incorporates chrome push top taps.
There are currently no grab/support rails within the toilet.

The reception area is immediately on left-hand side as you enter the hotel.
Reception counter is 1170 mm high where staff can offer further assistance.
A wall-mounted bell is available in reception to alert staff should they not be at reception at the time. The bell is on the right-hand side of the desk and is 1320 mm high.

Steps and stairs to bedrooms
Unfortunately there are no ground floor bedrooms at the Garden Hotel. All guest rooms are spread over the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors.
The ground floor staircase to access 1st floor rooms consists of 11 steps. The steps measure 780 mm in width, 250 mm in depth and 180 mm in height. A handrail is available on the left-hand side (as ascending).
At the resting spot at the top of stairs, room 21 is directly ahead and is accessed via a further two continuous risers measuring 180 mm in height and 230 mm in depth. The two steps also incorporate top and front edge step nosing.
Due to the structure of the property the remaining rooms on the 1st floor are accessed via a further six steps that are situated on the left hand side of the first floor landing. The first measures 830 mm in width; 240 mm in depth and 175 mm in height. The remaining five steps are continuous and also measure 830 mm in width; 240 mm in depth and 175 mm in height.
Bedrooms
Single, twin and double rooms are accessed via doors that contrast with surrounding walls and incorporate colour contrasted tactile room numbers lever action handles.
All rooms identical in colour scheme offering contrast between floor walls and furniture.
Rooms contain seating with firm back support and arm rests; cordless kettles; telephones with large buttons and televisions with remote control and Teletext facilities.
Range of lighting available within each room.
Ensuite bathrooms
Ensuite bathrooms are accessed via single leaf doors that include chunky, colour contrasting lever action handles.
All bathrooms include toilet, hand wash basin and shower.
Hand wash basins incorporate chrome cross head taps.
Shower trays are 250 mm in height and incorporate non-slip base and adjustable shower heads.
Ensuite bathrooms consist of plain beige suites and beige marble effect tiles offering a slight contrast in colour.
